Karlas Chao is an architectural designer whose work sits between computational design and human-centred placemaking. A graduate of the University of Nottingham and the Manchester School of Architecture, he is interested in how architecture can combine digital innovation with social and environmental responsibility.
His academic work has explored themes of urban commons, spatial justice and computational urbanism, developing design frameworks that use data and generative methods to support more inclusive forms of city-making. This research is complemented by professional experience working on large-scale residential developments in Hong Kong, where he contributed to projects from concept design through technical development.
Outside architecture, Karlas works as a freelance graphic designer, creating visual identities and publications for clients across the UK and Hong Kong. He sees architecture, graphic design and film as complementary forms of visual storytelling, each shaping how people understand and experience the built environment.
